Maarten Reijnders sucks Microsoft balls

Today Maarten Reijnders (Dutch Link), freelance writer for Webwereld, wrote an article about Firefox, called “5 things that are wrong with Firefox” (DL). Curious as I was I clicked on the link to see what he sees as weak points. Reading it hurted me and I had to do something with it.

  1. Google “owns” Firefox. Google might have a “don’t be evil” informal corporate motto, their shareholders want to see profit.
  2. Firefox is insecure. Last year 122 were found in Firefox, against 57 in Internet Explorer.
  3. Firefox requires at least Windows 2000, where Opera can be installed on Windows 95 even.
  4. Firefox is slow. Not compared to Internet Explorer, because that is preloaded by Windows and would be a fake compare (+1 for that, Maarten). If you need a fast browser try Opera.
  5. Add-ons can make Firefox unstable.

You call that ICT-news? My grandmother can make better reviews then that! And also more objective. Here’s my reply to the article.

  1. Windows is commercial. Firefox is commercial. Most Linux distros are commercial. Making money with software is the only way to go for every healthy company. Why is that wrong?
  2. Internet Explorer is based on old and, by now, proven code. Opera is not widely-enough used to be interesting for bug-hunters (and not even compared in the review). What else to expect? Symantec: The increase in Mozilla vulnerabilities was a by-product of internal and community driven security audits of the browser.
  3. That is a non issue! If you go online on ANY operating system that is no longer maintained by its makers you are a fool. Why would you support that? And one more thing, there is more then Windows out there.
  4. Now that might be the first and only real issue. I’m sure the Firefox team is working on that as we speak.
  5. 99% of the addons available on the web are made by others then the Firefox developers. Most are good programmers, some are really good and some are shit (but they are trying). NO WARRANTIES are given. But if you are able to install add-ons you are also wise enough to troubleshoot in case of crashes.

If Webwereld would be a paid service I would cancel my subsciption right now. What a shitty piece of journalisty!
