How to create Windows installation USB key part 2

December 10th, 2009 No comments

Some time ago I wrote a short tutorial on how to create a Windows installation USB key. The guide is still valid (and probably will be for quite some time), but there is an easier method now! Well, at least if you want to have Windows 7 on your USB key.

Microsoft has release Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool (direct link), which only requires a few mouse-clicks to create your key. All you need is the ISO-file  of Windows 7 (obtainable from your Microsoft Store Account), a working computer with Windows installed and an USB key. However I am not sure most netbook owners (the primary target audience for this tool since netbooks don’t have a CD-ROM player) have a Microsoft Store Account.

The fun part is that the tool has been release under the GPLv2 license. But that’s because they had to

Firefox crash

Funny pictures -Firefox crash

I LOLled!

Luckily my local installation of Firefox doesn’t crash that often, but when it happens it’s always good to be able to restore the session. I’m usually visiting pages not worth bookmarking, but worth visiting once. I’m not sure if Internet Explorer has such a feature, but I’m not using that anyway. But I’m pretty sure Portable Internet Explorer is not an option, where Portable Firefox rules! I just stick in USB and have all my own programs and settings anywhere. Beat that Microsoft.

I recently had such a rare Firefox crash and didn’t want to spent any more time on that Windows installation (because of more problems). I plugged in the USB in my laptop and restored my session on it. Long live open source! Too bad my games don’t run (good enough) on *nix :(

Concerned about losing your stick would put your data on the street? Encrypt your data on-the-fly with TrueCrypt and even that is covered. Too bad my Apacer stick has been replaced 2 times already because it just failed on me. That thought me to make backups regularly!

XBMC for Windows

August 19th, 2008 No comments

I wrote earlier about the XBMC feature freeze and how I couldn’t get the version for Windows working. Fully my fault! I used to download the T3CH version of the software, but she decided not to included the Windows execute a while ago. That’s when I started downloading the source code and compiled my own versions for Windows. WRONG! That gives an incomplete Windows version for skinning purposes only. The correct version can be found here and works like a charm! The beauty of XBMC now at my PC :)
